Rabbie Burns

Born in Alloway on the 25th January 1759, Burns is known world-wide for the superb expression, insight and honesty of his work.

The son of a farmer , Burns' education lasted until only his 9th year until required by his father to learn to work the plough.

Despite poverty Burns read as widely as he could and at eighteen discovered the works of poet Robert Ferguson and beween tending his ailing father and attempting to run the farm turned his hand to poetry.

Sir William Wallace

Son of minor nobleman Sir Malcolm Wallace, William Wallace was born in 1270 in Elerslie, Renfrew.

Initially William Wallace was educated at home by his mother, then given schooling and religious education by the monks of Paisley Abbey. Though William Wallace could read and write he was probably more interested in activities such as horsemanship, hunting and swordmanship - sparring with his elder brother Sir Malcolm Wallace Jnr. and younger brother John Wallace (later to become one of his trusted comrade-in-arms).

One of the first real golf professionals and undoubtedly the most successful of his era was Old Tom Morris. As well as being an outstanding player, he was actively involved in club making, and course maintenance in the St. Andrews area around the 1840's. His move to Prestwick Golf Club in 1851 to become "Keeper of the Greens" brought him a wage of 15 shillings per week.

William Wallace bust.

After sporadic violence occured following the deposition of Scottish king, John Deballiol, William Wallace and some 30 men burned Lanark and killed its English sherrif. Wallace organised an army of commoners and attacked the English garrisons between the rivers Forth and Tay. Heavily outnumbered Wallace gained an over whelming victory over Edward I English army at Stirling Bridge and the in the following October invaded northern England, sacking Northumberland and Cumberland. Sir WilliamWallace was knighted and proclaimed Guardian of Scotland.

Burns in Masonic Regalia

The world famous poet Robert Burns was born on the 25th of January 1759 in Alloway, Ayrshire. His poetic works are recognised world-wide and he is familiar to Freemasons as the Poet Laureate of Canongate Lodge Kilwinning, No.2.

In 1781 he joined St. Davids Lodge, No.133, Tarbolton, the first of six lodges he was to join. By 1784 he was Depute Master of St. James Lodge No.178, again in Kilwinning. Two years after the publication of his Kilmarnock Edition he was Master of a lodge in Mauchline.

Jock Stein

Jock Stein was one of the most successful football managers Scotland has ever produced.

As a player he was signed by Glasgow Celtic in 1951 but due to an ankle injury his career was prematurely ended.

Stein's first managerial post was with struggling Dunfermline F.C. Facing near certain relegation Dunfermline needed six wins out of six to avoid the drop- a feat they achieved under Steins guidance.
