The world famous poet
Robert Burns was born on the 25th of January 1759 in Alloway,
Ayrshire. His poetic works are recognised world-wide and he is
familiar to Freemasons as the Poet Laureate of Canongate Lodge
Kilwinning, No.2.
In 1781 he joined
the Lodge of St. David, No.133, Tarbolton, the first of six lodges
he was to join. By 1784 he was Depute Master of St. James Lodge
No.178, again in Kilwinning. Two years after the publication of
his Kilmarnock Edition he was Master of a lodge in Mauchline.
Burns work strikes
a particular chord with members of the craft with it's underlying
message of equality and brotherhood a fundamental part of Masonic
